Player dies 3 days after collapsing

Herald-Leader staff report

A 15-year-old high school football player in Louisville has died three days after he and a teammate collapsed in practice. Max Gilpin died Saturday night at Kosair Children's Hospital, Norton Healthcare spokeswoman Patti Killion told The Courier-Journal. Killion did not know the cause of death.

The sophomore offensive lineman and a 17-year-old senior player at Pleasure Ridge Park had trouble breathing after Wednesday's practice, and both were hospitalized. The other player was released Friday.

The school's principal, David Johnson, said Gilpin was resuscitated while hospitalized.

"The family decided not to do it again, and took him off life support," he said.

School district officials looked at paperwork for the 94-degree practice, spoke to coaches and found they did nothing wrong. The players had regular water breaks.
